Charter

The Data Stewardship Council (DSC) is the primary campus forum for the overall management of campus data (1) and the establishment of a shared enterprise data environment. The DSC promotes data stewardship across the UC Berkeley enterprise and provides oversight, prioritization, policy, tools and training to support the campus in managing and protecting its data assets.

The DSC identifies, analyzes, and makes decisions on key functional and technical components of a strategy for managing the campus' data. This includes matters related to data access, privacy, security and use, data governance, data sharing, data integration, data warehousing, information architecture, data quality, data standards, and metadata management.

The DSC carries out its charge through research, planning, consultation, recommendations, and communication. Further, it supports select data-driven initiatives, such as the Enterprise Data Warehouse. The DSC also articulates policy questions for referral to the appropriate campus groups including the Chancellor's cabinet, and makes recommendations on the purchase of technology, and the design, funding and prioritization of campus data-driven initiatives.

The DSC reports to the Berkeley campus Vice Chancellor–Administration and functions as an advisory group for the Campus Technology Council (CTC). The DSC consults with campus constituencies, including the Academic Senate Committee on Computing and Communications, on topics under consideration.

Much of the work of the DSC is carried out by subcommittees and working groups that bring together data experts to examine particular issues in depth and recommend solutions to the DSC.

DSC voting members are appointed by the Vice Chancellor-Administration. Members represent data management functions by campus data set and include: data proprietors, custodians, integrators, and information compliance officers. Campus data experts are encouraged to participate in DSC meetings, subcommittees, and working groups.
